Inverting Opacity/Alpha of a Pixel Layer (and How to Use it)
Each pixel has both RGB values and an 'Alpha' (A) value, which sets the transparency (or opacity or alpha) of that pixel. Sometimes when you have a layer (which can be a pixel layer, shape, etc) you might want to invert the transparency/alpha/opacity of the layer. Doing a standard layer invert only changes the colour. Here's a very simple way to do an alpha invert, plus an example (using it as a pixel mask) of how it might be used.

Easy Watercolour Effect Using Tone Mapping Persona
Переглядів 1,7 тис.7 місяців тому
The Tone Mapping Persona with in Affinity Photo is largely intended for use with creating 'HDR' (High Dynamic Range) effects, but can also be used for the picture-enhancing tone mapping and local contrast controls it offers. Here, we are using this multiple times to create an image to blend into the original which can then produce a pleasing faded or watercolour effect. For related videos, see ...
he Compound Vignette Method for Managing Eye Movement
Переглядів 1 тис.7 місяців тому
Vignettes work by darkening the edge of an image so that the eye moves away from it and back into the main part of the image. A compound vignette works by using additional methods to achieve this eye-bouncing effect, including adjustment of saturation and sharpness. The reverse effect can also be used, for example by sharpening and brightening only those areas which you want to attract the eye....

60 Second Tip: Removing the Built-in Adjustment/Filter Mask
Переглядів 1,3 тис.8 місяців тому
All live adjustments and filters in Affinity Photo have built-in masks so you can limit the adjustment/filter effect to only a part of the image. However, if you want to remove the mask, there is no easily apparent way to do this. Fortunately there is a method, which goes through the Alpha layer in the Channels tab. It was a great idea you had to include "Mono Protect" in your macro. For me, that makes it a better choice over AP2's Hue Range Mask. But how can I learn how to create my own procedural textures? I've looked at the equations you use, but they make no sense to me.

Super vid, the first I have seen that makes more sense that a mask is not in the layer stack but as you showed is actually along side of the layer it is attached to, and that nice graphic does make it more clear. But I confess when you start dragging mask around the layers I have no clue as Affinity seems to have a mind of it's own where/if it will let you grab/drop it. Sometime the layer looks like your example ie a layer an inset ( child ? ) mask underneath where sometimes the both are independently selectable and other times selecting either the layer or the mask highlights them both, totally confused, then other times they are side by side, extra confused, and I can't find any good info from the Affinity video lib ( unless I have missed it ), I guess they are all for the professional users and not the casual users like me and zillion others worldwide, so this vid does at least demystify the very first part of using a mask clearly. Many thks and Kind Rgds. PS. Are all these 'clipping' masks, I hear/see that term used here and there.

I have seen lots of photos of landscapes where the green tones (grass and leaves) look so saturated to me as to be positively weird. Is the camera recording the green saturation incorrectly, or are our eyes so sensitive to green tones that we just perceive green as highly saturated?

It's not your fault. It's Serif's fault for trying to pack too many different operations into dragging on the layer stack: "...above the line..." "..below the line..." "drag onto name..." "drag onto icon..." "drag onto bar..." Each of these can produce a different result and I find it impossible to remember which drag operation produces which result. And with V2 you now have linked layers with their own subordinate layers, which is even harder to figure out. It would have been just fine to have the Arrange menu with operations like "Create clipping mask" and "Create child layer" and so on, with the "scope" of the layers in the layer stack shown with icons or letters indicating "clipping mask" or "child layer". Also a colored arrow showing which layer is linked to which other layer. Certainly a novice would find "Create clipping mask" easier to understand than "above the line" and "below the line"

Well i may as double up your comments section. When using the brush tool points of overlap double the density and make for uneven shadows. How do we set the brush so that an brush overlap is the same density. Even dropping the layers opacity to 30% does not work. Adding wet edges to the brush helps but its still increases density on points of overlap not by much but it is noticable. Any advice most welcome.

I'd like to save some of my gradient maps, but if I click on the adjustment button on the bottom (between the mask and fx button) my saved gradients are not there. I understand that if you click on "adjustment" on the toolbar (yours is next to layers, effects and stack on the right just below the opacity slider) you can see saved gradient maps. How do you get "adjustment" to appear on that toolbar? It's not there on my user interface and I can't seem to find a way make it appear. I know it's easy - can you help me? Thanks - I love gradient maps but would like to save them for batch photos, etcs. Thanks for your amazing videos!!!
